Parts of a plant
- roots
- fix the plant, absorb water and nutrients, store food (a thick main root or many small roots)
- stem
- supports the plant and carries water. Herbaceous: thin and soft. Woody: hard and rigid (trees with a trunk, shrubs)
- leaves
- make food. Parts: blade and petiole
- shapes: round, ovate, linear, needle-shaped…
- edges: smooth, toothed, lobed
Photosynthesis
- Roots take in water and mineral salts: raw sap. It goes up the stem.
- Leaves take in carbon dioxide and sunlight and make elaborated sap, which goes to all the plant.
- Plants release oxygen. They also breathe (respiration).
Flowers, fruits and seeds
- pistil
- female part, with the ovary
- stamens
- male part, they produce pollen
- corolla / calyx
- petals / green sepals
Pollen → pistil of another flower → the ovary becomes a fruit (fleshy: melon; dry: almond) → the seed (with an embryo) germinates.
Types of plants
| Seed plants: flowering | Seed plants: non-flowering | Seedless plants |
|---|---|---|
| flowers and fruits | cones and needle-shaped leaves | no flowers, fruits or seeds |
| apple tree, poppy | pine, fir, cypress | mosses, ferns |
Why are plants important?
They give us oxygen, food, medicines, cotton, paper and wood. They are home to animals and protect the soil. Save forests: plant trees, keep to paths, pick up litter, reuse paper.
