The five kingdoms
| Kingdom | What they are like | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| animals | eat other living things and can move | dog, eagle, snail, shark |
| plants | make their own food with sunlight (photosynthesis) | oak, rose, fern, moss |
| fungi | can't make their food: many feed on dead matter | mushroom, mould, yeast |
| protists | tiny living things that live in water | amoeba, algae |
| bacteria | the smallest living things, only one cell | the bacteria in yoghurt |
Fungi
- Fungi are not plants: they can't make their own food.
- We use yeast to make bread rise.
- Some mushrooms are very poisonous: never eat wild mushrooms.
Protists and bacteria
They are microscopic: we need a microscope to see them. Algae do photosynthesis, like plants. Some bacteria make us ill, but others help us digest food or make yoghurt and cheese.
Respect all living things
Fungi and bacteria are decomposers: they break down dead matter. Every living thing has a role in its ecosystem, from the smallest bacterium to the biggest whale.
